Your Newborn Photoshoot: Everything First-Time Parents Need to Know

Bringing your baby home for the first time is a moment like no other.

You’re tired, overwhelmed, and completely in love. This tiny human is suddenly all yours, and all you want to do is stare at their little face, count their fingers and toes, and memorise every detail. At the same time, the days blur together as you learn how to be a parent, often on very little sleep.

What many parents don’t realise in those early days is just how quickly this stage passes. Your baby will grow at record speed. By the time you feel settled and into a routine, they’ll already look different – longer, more alert, more expressive. A newborn photoshoot gives you a way to pause time and remember just how small they once were.

If you’re looking for Newborn photos in North Hertfordshire that capture the newness of your brand new baby then these sessions are designed just for you.

Why Newborn Photos Are So Important

Newborn photos aren’t just about pretty images – they’re about preserving a moment that can never be recreated.

This is the stage where:

  • Their hands curl into tiny fists around your little finger
  • Their features are soft and brand new
  • They still fit perfectly into your arms

For many families, a newborn session is also when the very first family photographs are taken. These images become part of your family’s story, capturing the love, emotion, and connection you feel during those early days.

What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot?

Newborn sessions at Baby Whispers Photography are calm, unhurried, and completely baby-led.

I work at your baby’s pace, allowing time for:

  • Feeding
  • Cuddles
  • Nappy changes
  • Settling and soothing

I don’t force babies into poses or rush through a checklist. Some photographers prefer very structured sessions, but my approach is gentle and responsive – your baby’s comfort and safety always come first.

Sessions include a mix of:

  • Softly guided poses that your baby is happy to be in
  • Natural, relaxed moments
  • Family photographs that show genuine connection as well as some that look more formal

Every session is different, because every baby is different.

Your Baby’s Safety Comes First

Safety is the most important part of any newborn photoshoot.

With well over a decade of experience working with newborns, I understand their cues, movements, and limits. Babies are always supported, never placed into positions they’re uncomfortable with, and never forced into poses.

Parents often feel reassured knowing that:

  • Hands are always close by
  • Babies are fully supported at all times
  • Sessions are slow, warm, and calm

You can relax knowing your baby is in safe, experienced hands.

How Involved Do Parents Need to Be?

This is entirely up to you.

Some parents love to be hands-on, helping with settling, cuddles, or simply staying close. Others prefer to sit back, rest, and watch while I take care of everything.

There is no right or wrong. Whether you want to be very involved or completely hands-off, I’ll guide you gently and make sure you feel comfortable throughout the session.

Colour and Styling Options

I offer a range of colours, from the timeless, neutral colour options that photograph beautifully to a colourful selection from pastels to brights that will suit your own personal taste and style.

This way you can choose the shades that will work perfectly for wall art, albums, and prints in your home.

If you have preferences or ideas, we can always discuss them – the session is tailored to you.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photoshoot?

The best time for newborn photos is within the first three weeks of life, when babies are naturally sleepier and curl more easily.

If your baby hasn’t arrived yet, I recommend booking during pregnancy to secure a space. If your baby is already here, you’re always welcome to get in touch – I do my very best to fit families in whenever possible.

Even if you feel unsure or think you may have left it too late, it’s always worth asking.

Capturing This Chapter of Your Story

Those early days are intense, emotional, and fleeting. Between feeds, cuddles, and sleepless nights, it’s easy to forget just how tiny your baby once was.

A newborn photoshoot gives you a way to hold onto this chapter – the love, the closeness, and the very beginning of your family’s story. And as your baby grows and changes, you’ll be so grateful you didn’t miss this stage.

How Much Do the Sessions Cost?

There are three Newborn photoshoot packages availale, so you can choose the option that works best for your family. Packages start from £220 (includes 5 high resolution digital files), with upgrades available if you’d like more images.

Each Newborn photoshoot lasts around 2 hours, giving us plenty of time to capture a mix of poses and colours for your baby as well as both posed and natural family portraits.
