How to Include Toddlers in Your Newborn Photoshoots: Tips for a Smooth Experience

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time for the whole family – and for toddlers, it can be a big adjustment. If you’re planning a newborn photoshoot in Royston, Hertfordshire, involving your older child can create beautiful, meaningful images while helping them feel included in this special moment.

At Baby Whispers Photography, I very often include older siblings in maternity and newborn sessions. Whether it’s a gentle hug, a bump kiss during pregnancy, or even just helping with little tasks in the studio, these moments capture the beginnings of a lifelong bond.

If you’re looking for Newborn photos in Hertfordshire that capture this pivotal time in your families journey then these sessions are designed just for you.

Why Including Toddlers Matters

Toddlers can sometimes feel left out when a new baby arrives and sometimes that can show in their behavior at home and during photoshoots. Giving them small, manageable ways to participate can:

  • Help them feel important and involved
  • Build a connection with their new sibling
  • Make the photoshoot calmer and more enjoyable for everyone

Even though your toddler won’t be in every photo, their presence and involvement can be felt in meaningful ways.

Tips for Helping Toddlers Feel Included

Here are some tried-and-true strategies that I use in the studio:

Keep Sessions Calm and Relaxed
Toddlers respond best to patience and guidance. Sometimes they run in and out of shots, and that’s okay, I am so complimented on my incredible patience. As I know with some gentle encouragement, the photos still capture authentic, loving moments.

Talk About the Photoshoot in Advance
Reading books, showing pictures, or even discussing what will happen at the session can make it feel less intimidating for toddlers. You can also look through the photos on my website or videos on social media to get an idea of what to expect and maybe even look through with them their own baby pictures to help them understand what to expect.

Give Them Small Responsibilities
Tasks like choosing a headband or hat, or helping “organise” the props give toddlers a sense of purpose. This can look like giving them a choice between 2 or 3 pre-approved items, backdrop colours for example. These little roles make them feel like part of the process without pressure. Alternatively, if they are happy to chill with a game or show on your tablet/phone and a snack then that is equally just as perfect.

Include Them in the Photos (When Comfortable)
Gentle bump kisses, holding the baby briefly, or simply standing nearby as a helper can help toddlers feel proud and connected. I always adjust sessions based on their comfort level, so the experience is positive for everyone – including the baby!

Real Studio Moment: Big Brother as My Assistant

Recently, during a newborn session, one little boy had already been in front of the camera with his family. When it was his baby sister’s turn for her sleepy solo photos, he didn’t have to be involved – but he wanted to.

I handed him headbands and tiny hats to hold while I worked, and he watched carefully, quietly taking his “assistant” role seriously. These small, voluntary contributions not only made him feel included but created heartwarming memories that parents will treasure forever.

Why Professional Guidance Helps

Working with a professional newborn photographer in Royston, Hertfordshire ensures your baby’s safety while creating moments that matter. As a mum to 3 myself, I bring patience, over 10 years of specialised newborn experience, and gentle guidance to every session – especially when older siblings are involved.

By planning ahead, giving toddlers small responsibilities, and keeping sessions calm, you’ll walk away with photos that capture genuine love and connection, rather than forced poses.
