Newborn Poses: What to Expect at Your New Baby’s First Photoshoot

Read about the session flow during a Newborn Photoshoot

Newborn photography is all about capturing the tiny details, soft features, and pure innocence of your baby in their earliest days. While I have a structured approach to ensure we create a full and varied gallery, flexibility is key. Every baby is unique, and their comfort is always my top priority.

A Thoughtfully Planned Routine for a Sleepy Baby

When a baby is settled and sleepy, I follow a gentle posing flow designed to capture a range of stunning images without disturbing their rest. I will usually start with the bum-up pose, a natural and beautifully curled-up position. From there, I move into the relaxed chin-on-hands pose, followed by the more refined formal chin-on-hands pose. If baby remains settled, we progress to the froggy pose, a classic yet advanced pose that requires baby to be deeply relaxed. (see images above)

Once we’ve captured these curled-up images, I transition baby onto their back for some creative setups, such as the laying-in-bed pose with teddies or a swing shot, adding variety to their final gallery.

To maintain consistency and avoid waking baby unnecessarily, I typically stick to one backdrop colour for these sleepy posed shots. However, if baby has been unsettled and needs a break, I can use that time to change the backdrop if parents would like to add another colour for variety.

What Happens If Baby Is Awake?

Some babies arrive wide-eyed and ready to take in the world! In these cases, I adjust my approach while still ensuring we capture a stunning range of images. I’ll start by wrapping baby snuggly, allowing for beautiful wide-awake shots while they lay comfortably on their back.

This is also a great time to move into family portraits, both as a full family and with individual parent shots. If baby remains content, I’ll capture a second variation of family images to give parents more variety in their gallery.

Whether baby is awake or asleep, I will also generally include a posed images in a prop, usually a basket, to bring another dimension to the final set of images.

Flexibility for Baby’s Needs

Newborn sessions are entirely baby-led, and I never rush. There’s always time for feeds, nappy changes, or comforting cuddles. If baby needs extra snuggles with mum or dad, we’ll pause or try to capture some precious parent-baby moments before returning to individual poses once baby is settled again.

If a particular pose isn’t working, I won’t force it. Some babies don’t like being on their front, while others don’t enjoy lying flat on their back, sometimes they may be having an ‘off’ day. But I always attempt most of these poses as part of my usual routine, but if it’s clear after a few minutes of soothing that your baby isn’t comfortable or happy to try, then I’ll either set it aside for later or skip it entirely.

The goal is always to keep baby happy while ensuring parents receive a beautiful, full gallery of images.

A Beautiful Gallery, No Matter What

At the end of the session, whether we followed my full posing routine or adapted to baby’s and/or parents preferences, you can rest assured that you will receive a gallery filled with beautiful, timeless and heartwarming images of your baby.

My goal is to create a stress-free, enjoyable experience while capturing the bubble of those first few weeks in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and beautiful.
