Common Myths About Newborn Photography (And the Truth!)

If you’re considering a newborn photoshoot, you may have heard a few things about how it works. There are plenty of myths floating around, and many parents come to their session with expectations that aren’t entirely accurate. The truth is, newborn photography is a unique experience that requires patience, skill, and flexibility (spoiler alert: your baby will generally rule the roost on the day!)

To help you feel prepared, I’m debunking some of the most common myths so you can relax and enjoy the process!

Myth 1: “My baby needs to be asleep the whole time.”
Truth: While many of the classic newborn poses are easier with a sleepy baby and some definately can only happen with a sleeping baby. Wide-eyed images are also something that I strive for if possible as they can be just as beautiful! Some of my favourite portraits are when babies are awake, taking in the world around them. I work with your baby’s natural rhythm, ensuring we capture a mix of dreamy, peaceful shots and those adorable, curious expressions.

Myth 2: “I need to bring lots of outfits and props.”

Truth: Less is more when it comes to newborn photography! I provide a carefully selected range of soft wraps in a rainbow of colours, simple outfits, and timeless props that keep the focus on your baby. While you’re welcome to bring a sentimental item, there’s no need to worry about finding the ‘perfect’ outfit—your baby is perfect just as they are!

Myth 3: “Newborns need to be a certain age for photos.”

Truth: The ideal window for a newborn photoshoot for me is within the first 3 weeks, as babies tend to be sleepier and more flexible for curled-up poses. However, if you’ve missed this timeframe, don’t worry! I can capture beautiful images of your baby at any stage. They just might be a bit more awake in more photos the older they are, and a few of the trickier poses may not be possible. But whether they’re a few days old or a few weeks old, I’ll be able to create a stunning gallery that you and your family will cherish forever.

Myth 4: “The session will be quick and easy.”

Truth: Newborn photography requires time and patience for each and every shot. Your session will include plenty of breaks for feeding, settling, and cuddles. I allow enough time to work at your baby’s pace, ensuring they are comfortable and content throughout.

Now that these myths are busted, you can feel confident knowing what to expect from your newborn session! My goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience while capturing images that will be treasured for years.
